Project Management is the discipline of planning, organizing and managing resources, whether the project is development of a new product, the launch of a new service, a marketing campaign, or a wedding. A project is not a part of normal business operations. It’s typically created once and is temporary and specific.
- Hard line methodology – the end rather than the ‘mean to the end’
Some Project Managers vouch that their method is better and they cannot successfully complete a project without it. Instead of getting the project done, which is the essence of Project Management, there is a fuss over the methodology used. The golden opportunities are missed and the possibility of faster and better methodologies is blindly overlooked. This has a strong influence on the delivery of the project.
- Fixation for sticking to the process
Project Managers can obstruct their own progress by sticking to the standard processes. Though following the process is fair but it has drawbacks too, such as excess paperwork and delay. Some Project Managers are control freaks who believe that if they did not enforce a process, they can no longer have a strong command over the project. Most of the project managers rely on process as they have a record of who has approved what and who has done what. If something did go wrong, they would not be reprimanded for the same.
- Nonexistent creativity-technical and managerial
Project management imposes deadlines on employees though individuals would like to be more creative at their tasks. With deadlines, there is no room for creativity. But if the managers keep pushing the employees to see nothing but the deadline, the goal is entirely shifted towards timely completion of tasks from creativity. This reduces the morale of the resources and adversely affects the quality of the end product.Project Management, by nature, enforces a routine process. The managerial skills wan over time, as it is saturated with no space to sharpen their talent. The process is crystal clear with uniform standards to be followed. What’s more is that even the functional managers lose their enthusiasm.
- Turnaround time
Blurred and tentative deadlines cause unnecessary delays. Strict deadlines must be enforced for timely completion. The deadlines should be precise and quantifiable as possible, not only for the entire project itself, but for each task and area.
- Open communication
Project managers fail to identify the upcoming chaos the project can bring in near future. This is usually the root of any failed project. Even though some person from the team might be aware about the same but he/she does not question the manager. Encourage risk communication and be receptive to any ideas or suggestions to prevent speculated risks.
- Learn to open your mouth
Project management is not for the coy. One should have the ability to listen to the client and guide the client in the right direction. A project manager should not be merely a medium of communication between the project team and the client. The project manager has the expertise and the knowledge and has been hired for the same. Just following the client instructions as they come, has done no one good, neither the client nor the project. Project management is not about outsourcing work.
- Clarify the delegation
Some of the risks to be considered are strategic, technological, financial, productivity-related and personnel-related. But what happens if the project is not done, and who is ultimately accountable? You cannot hold random people accountable for project failure without getting the facts right. Project Managers feel that once they are done with the list of the risks, their tasks are complete. But who will decipher who is responsible for what risk? It is logical that someone has to feel the heat if a project threat occurs. Especially, if different business units, departments and suppliers are involved, it becomes a headache to find who was responsible for the mishap. Therefore, the division of responsibilities should be done beforehand. Fights over (unexpected) revenues can become a long-term pastime of management.
Conclusion:
Everything in life has its pros and cons. If you decide on implementing project management, analyze your gains and perspective drawbacks before giving the red signal to project management.
